Incidents of shards of glass in processed foods have spread to Finland after creating consumer panic in Sweden over the past few weeks. The Finnish Food Safety Authority (EVIRA) has received a number of complaints in recent days from people who bought food products that appear to contain pieces of glass.
EVIRA’s Director Jaana Husu-Kallio stated: “There have been a handful of contacts. They are connected with very different kinds of products, from Karelian pies, to salads, and sliced meat.” The reports have come from all over Finland, but EVIRA has yet to confirm if glass is the culprit in every one of the cases.
Aamulehti is just one of several Finnish newspapers reporting on the fear, saying that a family in Lapua had discovered three pieces of glass in a pack of frozen vegetables. Finland’s Food and Environmental Laboratory in Seinajoki tested the family’s vegetables and confirmed that glass was indeed inside. However, the glass shards were different from those found in Swedish food.
The whole panic began in Sweden, where consumers have been finding large pieces of glass in packages of chicken and other processed food. Police in Sweden are considering it a possible case of sabotage but AVILA is telling Finns to stay calm for the time being until they can determine exactly where the glass is coming from.
